A Managed Care Network and Financial Risks Network - 550 Words

A Managed Care Network and Financial Risks Network (Essay Sample) Content: A MANAGED CARE NETWORKNameInstitutionIn health care, managed care is a system that has administrative control over primary healthcare services in medical practice. Its primary objective is to eliminate excess services and facilities in a bid to cut down on cost. Being part of this program can be of great benefit to healthcare enterprises in more ways than one, be it in staffing, patient load and financial stability, as well. With regards to staffing, my clinic would get the privilege of having experienced and well qualified staff- doctors, nurses or any other. This comes since my enterprise will be knitted together through and by a joint equity investment of the physicians and the mother enterprise-the managed care enterprise. This will ensure quality services delivered to the patients and a comfortable recuperating environment for them, as well. Having qualified staff, well trained and with the proper etiquette required in their field will appeal to the present patien ts and will even help grow the enterprise as a ripple effect from the good publicity and reputation the enterprise would have earned. Also, having a managed care program will create a really good and luring impression on the practitioners out there; hence my clinic would not find it hard looking for a replacement or an extra hand as the enterprise grows (Kongstvedt, 2001).In as much as there will be a significant increase in patient enrolment into the clinic, this patient load will be countered and eased in the long run. Notably, the enterprise, as a result of being part of a larger network will enjoy extra bits of funding from the mother enterprise (Brown, 1994). This in turn will lead to the physical expansion of my clinic, which is more bed space, and also a boost in staffing, as well. Also as an added benefit to being part of the network, the patients that may be in need of advanced care or just in case of patient overflows, the doctor can make referrals to the other clinics or hospitals that are part of the network and at the end of it all, my clinic still ends up benefiting and the patient load is very well taken care of.Stability financially will be borderline rock-solid. My clinic will enjoy shared financial risks together with the enterprises within the network; hence being in it comes as a benefit for my small clinic. This will also come with reduced self-funding, which translates to gains for my clinic. The whole package that comes with being part of a network does come with funding in it, and good funding at that (Powell, 2...

E.B. Whites Drafts of Once More to the Lake

At the start of every fall term, countless students are asked to write an essay on what must be the most uninspired composition topic of all time: How I Spent My Summer Vacation. Still, its remarkable what a good writer can do with such a seemingly dull subject--though it may take a bit longer than usual to complete the assignment. In this case, the good writer was E.B. White, and the essay that took more than a quarter century to complete was Once More to the Lake. First Draft: Pamphlet on Belgrade Lake (1914) Back in 1914, shortly before his 15th birthday, Elwyn White responded to this familiar topic with uncommon enthusiasm. It was a subject the boy knew well and an experience that he fiercely enjoyed. Every August for the past decade, Whites father had taken the family to the same camp on Belgrade Lake in Maine. In a self-designed pamphlet, complete with sketches and photos, young Elwyn began his report clearly and conventionally This wonderful lake is five miles wide, and about ten miles long, with many coves, points and islands. It is one of a series of lakes, which are connected with each other by little streams. One of these streams is several miles long and deep enough so that it affords an opportunity for a fine all-day canoe trip. . . .The lake is large enough to make the conditions ideal for all kinds of small boats. The bathing also is a feature, for the days grow very warm at noon time and make a good swim feel fine. (reprinted in Scott Elledge, E.B. White: A Biography. Norton, 1984) Second Draft: Letter to Stanley Hart White (1936) In the summer of 1936, E. B. White, by then a popular writer for The New Yorker magazine, made a return visit to this childhood vacation spot. While there, he wrote a long letter to his brother Stanley, vividly describing the sights, sounds, and smells of the lake. Here are a few excerpts: The lake hangs clear and still at dawn, and the sound of a cowbell comes softly from a faraway woodlot. In the shallows along shore the pebbles and driftwood show clear and smooth on bottom, and black water bugs dart, spreading a wake and a shadow. A fish rises quickly in the lily pads with a little plop, and a broad ring widens to eternity. The water in the basin is icy before breakfast, and cuts sharply into your nose and ears and makes your face blue as you wash. But the boards of the dock are already hot in the sun, and there are doughnuts for breakfast and the smell is there, the faintly rancid smell that hangs around Maine kitchens. Sometimes there is little wind all day, and on still hot afternoons the sound of a motorboat comes drifting five miles from the other shore, and the droning lake becomes articulate, like a hot field. A crow calls, fearfully and far. If a night breeze springs up, you are aware of a restless noise along the shore, and for a few minutes before you fall asleep you hear the intimate talk between fresh-water waves and rocks that lie below bending birches. The insides of your camp are hung with pictures cut from magazines, and the camp smells of lumber and damp. Things dont change much. . . .(Letters of E.B. White, edited by Dorothy Lobrano Guth. Harper Row, 1976) Final Revision: Once More to the Lake (1941) White made the return journey in 1936 on his own, in part to commemorate his parents, both of whom had recently died. When he next made the trip to Belgrade Lake, in 1941, he took along his son Joel. White recorded that experience in what has become one of the best-known and most frequently anthologized essays of the past century, Once More to the Lake: We went fishing the first morning. I felt the same damp moss covering the worms in the bait can, and saw the dragonfly alight on the tip of my rod as it hovered a few inches from the surface of the water. It was the arrival of this fly that convinced me beyond any doubt that everything was as it always had been, that the years were a mirage and there had been no years. The small waves were the same, chucking the rowboat under the chin as we fished at anchor, and the boat was the same boat, the same color green and the ribs broken in the same places, and under the floor-boards the same fresh-water leavings and debris--the dead hellgrammite, the wisps of moss, the rusty discarded fishhook, the dried blood from yesterdays catch. We stared silently at the tips of our rods, at the dragonflies that came and went. I lowered the tip of mine into the water, pensively dislodging the fly, which darted two feet away, poised, darted two feet back, and came to rest again a little farther up the ro d. There had been no years between the ducking of this dragonfly and the other one--the one that was part of memory. . . . (Harpers, 1941; reprinted in One Mans Meat. Tilbury House Publishers, 1997) Certain details from Whites 1936 letter reappear in his 1941 essay: damp moss, birch beer, the smell of lumber, the sound of outboard motors. In his letter, White insisted that things dont change much, and in his essay, we hear the refrain, There had been no years. But in both texts, we sense that the author was working hard to sustain an illusion. A joke may be deathless, the lake may be fade-proof, and summer may seem to be without end. Yet as White makes clear in the concluding image of Once More to the Lake, only the pattern of life is indelible: When the others went swimming my son said he was going in too. He pulled his dripping trunks from the line where they had hung all through the shower, and wrung them out. Languidly, and with no thought of going in, I watched him, his hard little body, skinny and bare, saw him wince slightly as he pulled up around his vitals the small, soggy, icy garment. As he buckled the swollen belt, suddenly my groin felt the chill of death. To spend almost 30 years composing an essay is exceptional. But then, you have to admit, so is Once More to the Lake. Postscript (1981) According to Scott Elledge in E.B. White: A Biography, on July 11, 1981, to celebrate his eighty-first birthday, White lashed a canoe to the top of his car and drove to the same Belgrade lake where, seventy years before, he had received a green old town canoe from his father, a gift for his eleventh birthday.

Cultural Diversity to the Industry-Free-Samples for Students

Question: Discuss about the Concept of Cultural Diversity and Role Played by it in Tourism and Hospitality Industry along with the benefits of Cultural Diversity to the Industry. Answer: Introduction Diversity is an important aspect which must be analysed and implemented in an organisation in an effective manner. It is crucial for employees of tourism and hospitality industry to understand the role of diversity management for interacting with other employees and customers in a better manner. This report will discuss the concept of cultural diversity and role played by it in tourism and hospitality industry along with the benefits of cultural diversity to the industry. Non-compliance with the cultural diversity can create an adverse impact on the performance of the industry. Different actions can be taken by tourism and hospitality industry for adopting cultural diversity. Figure 1: Cultural diversity Source: (Business in Rhyme, 2015 Selected diversity and importance of selected diversity in tourism and hospitality industry Cultural diversity has been selected as it is an important aspect and is of great concern for the tourism and hospitality industry. Cultural diversity can be understood as the sum total of the different individuals belonging from different cultural background, age, gender, caste, colour, religion, education, disability and skills. It is vital for the employees of the tourism and hospitality industry to understand the different cultures for providing better services to the customers and meeting their needs and expectations. Customers of tourism and hospitality industry are from different cultures and it is important for the industry to consider this aspect. Tourism and hospitality industry has provided a unique opportunity for gaining an understanding of the new cultural experience for the employees, tourists and guest (Pieters, 2014). Modern tourism and hospitality industry is dealing with the increasing globalisation or trade across borders. People are travelling all around the worl d which has increased the need for management of cultural diversity in the tourism and hospitality industry. Tourism and hospitality industry is operating in a culturally diverse environment. In the tourism and hospitality industry, it is vital for an organisation to consider cross-culture behaviour for enhancing the performance and gaining a competitive advantage over the others. Companies operating in the tourism and hospitality industry must consider and implement management of cultural diversity for growing at the global level. Cultural aspects act as a barrier between the organisation and customers and affect the performance of the organisation in this industry (Green, et. al., 2015). When organisations are not considering cultural diversity, this will results in monoculture organisation and limits the perspective of the organisation. Chances of growth and success of the organisation in this industry depend on the management process of cultural diversity. In the tourism and hospitality industry, customers or clients get attracted towards the different cultures of the different places (Bedi, 2016). Different individuals are from different cultures and for enhancing the performance of every individual there is a need to manage cultural diversity. Organisations in this industry are competing at the international level. The impact of cultural differences can be positive or negative on the performance of the organisation. Management of cultural diversity provides various opportunities to the organisations operating in this industry. These opportunities include strong employee base, strong customer base, innovations, transfer of knowledge competitiveness and high-qualit y services (Thitthongkam, 2013) Advantages to tourism and hospitality industry for adopting cultural diversity It is important for every organisation to consider the concept of cultural diversity as it affects the chances of success and growth. An organisation operating in the tourism and hospitality industry can gain various advantages by adopting cultural diversity. These benefits of adopting cultural diversity for organisations of this industry are discussed below: Employee satisfaction and motivation: organisations can adopt cultural diversity which will help in treating and interacting with the employees in a better manner. This will ensure that employees are satisfied and motivated. For example, Hyatt hotel is having one of the best workplaces around the globe. This has motivated the employees of Hyatt (Hyatt, 2016). Strong employee base and customer base: management of cultural diversity helps to provide a better environment and better services which help in developing strong employee base and customer base. It also results in reducing the cost involved in the recruitment process by developing effective workforce (Dike, 2013). Establishing a better relationship with the employees and customers: applying measures for managing cultural diversity will help in developing a healthy relationship between the management and employees and between the organisation and customers. This helps in generating trust and loyalty among the employees and customers. Improved customer service: satisfied workforce performs the roles and responsibilities assigned to them in an effective manner. This helps in providing better quality services to the customers and results in enhancing the satisfaction level among the customers of the tourism and hospitality industry. This helps the organisation of tourism and hospitality industry in developing brand image (Korjala, 2012). Competitive advantage: management of the cultural diversity in effective manner results in enhancing the competitiveness of the organisation. For example, Marriott is providing diversity management training to its employees for gaining competitive advantage (Marriott, 2017). Innovations and transfer of knowledge: multi-cultural workforce helps in sharing the experiences and knowledge of each other among the workforce. This sharing of experiences and knowledge results in developing employees and enhances innovations and creativity. Contributes towards enhanced productivity: when employees are working as a team and performing the operations by coordinating with each other, then it results in enhancing the performance of individual and overall productivity (Australian Multicultural Foundation, 2010). Cost and consequences to tourism and hospitality industry for not accounting cultural diversity Every organisation must adopt cultural diversity for managing its employee base and attracting customers. Failure to manage cultural diversity will result in adverse impact on the performance as well growth and success chances of the organisation. These consequences to the tourism and hospitality industry for not adopting cultural diversity are discussed below: Depletion in the quality of the services: international organisations of the industry are facing issues due to differences in the culture of employees. These differences in the culture of the employees affect the quality of the services offered. Conflicts among the employees: cultural differences among the employees of the organisation increase the conflicts between them. These conflicts may arise due to differences in the language, background, age, caste, tradition, religion, gender and other cultural aspects (Dike, 2013). High employee turnover rates: non-adoption of the cultural diversity increases the chances of conflicts among the employees and affects the quality of the workplace. This results in an increase in the employee turnover rates and cost involved in the selection and recruitment process of the organisation. Decreasing satisfaction level among the employees and customers: differences may arise among the workforce of the organisation due to lack of support and coordination. This decreases the satisfaction level of the employees and creates an impact on their performance. Depleting quality of the services decreases the satisfaction level of the customers (Thitthongkam, 2013). Decreasing productivity: productivity and effectiveness depend on the quality of the workforce. For the management of the quality of the workforce, it is vital to adopt cultural diversity. Lack of proper communication: communication channel adopted by the organisation may get affected due to the non-adoption of the cultural diversity at the workplace (Bedi, 2016). Actions taken by tourism and hospitality industry for adopting cultural diversity at the workplace and in the operations In the international organisation of this industry, a workforce of the organisation is diverse and customers or guests are from different cultural background. It is crucial for the management to establish proper measures for implementing cultural diversity for establishing a healthy relationship with the employees and customers or guests or visitors. Cultural diversity management plan must be formulated and adopted by the organisation (Gong, 2008). Training needs to be provided to the employees for coping with the cultural diversity and performing the roles and responsibilities as a team. Training to the employees will help in eliminating the language differences and will promote unity and team spirit among the employees. Every organisation of the tourism and hospitality industry must focus on the individual attitude and behaviour, skills and practices adopted by the managers and values and policies adopted by the organisation. These three aspects or elements help in determining the culture of the organisation and management of the cultural diversity in an effective manner (Patrick Kumar, 2012). Managerial skills and practices need to be applied for changing the behaviour of the employees towards cultural differences and promoting cultural diversity at the workplace. Mentoring programs must be conducted at the workplace. These mentoring programs help in motivating employees for adopting different cultural and working as a team. Awareness about the cultural diversity must be spread among the environment of the organisation. This awareness will help in developing an understanding of the employees (Podsiadlowski, et. al., 2013). Conclusion Thus, it can be concluded from the above discussion that management of cultural diversity is important for every industry. Diversity management has contributed towards the growth and profitability of the industry. For tourism and hospitality industry, diversity is crucial for employees as well as for the customers. Every industry operates at the global level and need arises to manage the diversity. This report has discussed the role played by cultural diversity in an organisation, advantages of adopting cultural diversity, consequences of not adopting cultural diversity and measures which can be taken by the tourism and hospitality industry. Machiavellis The Prince Is An Outstanding Book. It Presents The Theme

Machiavelli's The Prince is an outstanding book. It presents the theme of how to live the good life and be a good Prince. The good Prince is someone who is never afraid. He lives the good life by scaring other people. Machiavelli talks about how the Prince is someone who knows how to be a governor. He says, If you want to be a good Prince, then you should be a good Prince. (p. 45) My thesis is that the good life comes from being a good Prince. Machiavelli was one time an Italian. But there was no Italy. He was living in a place called Italy, which was in Florence. He lived the good life. I think that today when people live the good life, they call it like pimping. Like we said in class, being head of Italy (or Florence) was being like a Pimp Daddy. That's kind of what Machiavelli was about, which reminds us of the rapper Machiavelli. I think that the good life is like Pimping. In conclusion, the Prince is a pimp. Bibliography Machiavelli, The Prince. 1st edition. Wallflower Press, 1523.

Thelma and Louise Essays

Thelma and Louise Essays Thelma and Louise Paper Thelma and Louise Paper t is widely debated as to whether Thelma and Louise is a feminist film or not. Either way the film is unconventional, a road movie thats main characters are female. But as the narrative is not closed to interpretation, the ideological tensions are not worked out conclusively so there is room for argument. I will refer to two articles which hold opposing viewpoints. 1 Dargis claims that Thelma and Louise challenges the ideology of a genre by rewrit[ing] the road movie while Carlson argues that for [Thelma and Louise] feminism never happened. Carlson claims that the only difference between this and any other road movie is that women are plunked down in the lead rolls. In the act of attempting to achieve the desired freedom which is a key part of the narrative, the women have to behave like men. It would be considered a feminist movie if they could free themselves from men without having to become that which they are trying to escape from. Symbols throughout the movie are used to suggest this transition from feminine to masculine. For example, as Thelma is packing she delicately packs a very feminine gun, handling it with great care and even disgust, trying to touch it as little as possible. It shows her fear of manly objects and perhaps of having to defend herself. When later she saves Louise from the police officer who stops them for speeding, the gun is exchanged for a larger, manlier weapon. This could symbolise a woman becoming empowered. Dargis suggests it is used as a symbolic castration. Yet not only does the man loose his phallic symbol, but Thelma gains one. This could suggest there is a need to become like men to earn any freedom. There are many parallels to the male dominated road movie. Loud music, fast car, and almost never ending road and they are often shown in a extreme long shot, dwarfed by the scenery of the desert. This is often how men in road movies are portrayed, as if they are part of or becoming part of the landscape, or perhaps the landscape becoming a character. Yet I dont find this technique significant enough to claim that the characters are becoming men, as it is only a reference. The use of extreme long shots could also be interpreted as making the fugitives look small and vulnerable, although this isnt usually the case in the typical road movie. The vehicle as in many road movies almost becomes anthropomorphic. In one shot before they first meet the truck driver, the camera has a close up on the front car as its driving past the camera, then dollies down the side then tracks and pauses at the rear of the car to show its brand thunderbird. It may be a coincidence that a bird is slang for a woman. The car then drives off the screen. In this shot the idealism of the car is captured, sleek, stylish and fast. It embodies the freedom of the road. I find these parallels dont lead the viewer to consider the characters to be manly, although it creates an offbeat feeling as we expect that such characters should be men. Dargis argues that the narrative of Thelma and Louise is not just about a film in which women take the role of men in a road movie, but that it is custom-fitting [the road movie] to female specifications. Although the characters throughout the movie become less feminine in the way they act and dress, their intentions are not ideologically male. Instead of seeking wealth and power, they seek only freedom and pleasure, according to Dargis. Only when male characters try to force their will over these women do they retaliate to take the power back from the men, as happens when they lock the police man in his trunk, or by shooting the rapist. The narrative works out ideological tensions in power relations. Theres a struggle over who gains the power. The men want the power over women and they have it in the beginning of the film, and women want to have power over themselves, which they try to achieve. This shows that the women arent just plunked down in the starring roles as Carlson claimed. It involves the breakdown of typical film ideology, in which everyone has their place, and a womans place is submissive to men. We can see Louise beginning to turn away from men as she is packing her bags at the beginning, she calls her lover and receives an answering machine message. This causes her to turn his photograph face down. Although we can not see who the photograph is of, the connection is made by the expression on Louises face as she flips it over. This also suggests that this male character, as well as all other male characters will play a back seat in the rest of the film. Dargis contrasts this with other lead females from other movies who learn from men where Thelma and Louise look to each other to survive. Yet I would disagree with this point, as the men still have a large degree of control over the women throughout the film. The motivation for running from the law was fear of a male dominated justice system, and an incident involving a male rapist. Louise doesnt have the funds to make it to Mexico, so she relies on her lover to wire her the money.

Government policy - case study Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Government policy - case study - Essay Example In the case of country A, the government's goal is clear. They want to liberalize the agricultural markets while simultaneously choking off available credit for local farmers so as to bring greater productivity to their agriculture sector. They believe this is central to developing a modern economy. Moreover, they believe that if they bring rural workers/farmers into the cities and get them working in modern industrial positions greater amounts of investment funds would follow the low cost of industrial labor. The government also welcomes free trade with their neighbors, and even welcomes the competition from neighboring agriculture producers because of the attractive macro-economic predictions normally associated with free trade. However, the policy and those macro predictions fail on a micro level, due to insensitivity to the way the local families live. Clearly delineated, sexual roles, where men earn the money and women feed their families form the groundwork of the rural family, and have turned corn production in country A into a question of sexual and familiar identity.

Legal research Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Legal research - Essay Example He reckons that the law allows a spouse to seek legal redress when a torturous action is perpetrated against them. According to Illinois penal codes (Ch. 40, par. 1001), a married man or woman can sue or be sued, in all cases, by his or her wife. In addition, there no defense in saying that the person to whom the tort has been perpetrated to is your spouse. Section 40 declares that a judgment action shall be enforced against the spouse in disregard of marital condition, (Martin 127). This law is applied across the US. This law case arises from the Private Act of 1996 that was enacted across America. According to the Act, violation of privacy is a tort that is actionable even when evidence of damage is not available. In this case, the litigant is charged with responsibility of proofing that the tort perpetrator willfully and without claim of consent violates the privacy of another, (Martin 131). The Act further provides that "†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦the degree and nature of privacy to which a person is entitled to in a circumstances or in relation to a matter is that which is rational in the state of affairs, giving due consideration to the lawful interests of others .†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Cited from Martin (2013) p.127) When deciding whether the conduct or act is a violation of another person’s privacy, attention must be given to the incidence, nature, and occasion of the conduct and to any household or other relationship existing in the parties. In this case, the parties concerned are spouse and hence the litigation will be mitigated to divert to the fact that there exists insignificant privacy between a person and their spouse, (Martin 150). Therefore, this case is immaterial. Case brie gives a summary of legal facts in a given case. Time Management Essay Example for Free

Time Management Essay Study: â€Å"Working to live: Why university students balance full-time study and employment According to Valerie Holmes, within this group 83 per cent of students worked at some point during term-time of their degree programmed. In total 58 per cent of those students who worked did so to either cover or contribute to basic costs of living. While the majority of students felt they could balance work and study, half of all students questioned felt that working could have a negative impact on their degree classification. Valerie Holmes, (2008) Working to live: Why university students balance full-time study and employment, Education + Training, Vol. 50 Iss: 4, pp.305 – 314 http://www.emeraldinsight.com/journals.htm?articleid=1728331 | The work–study relationship: experiences of full†time university students undertaking part†time employment Journal of Education and Work Volume 23, Issue 5, 2010 Ralph Halla* Pages 439-449 Publishing models and article dates explained Received: 21 Apr 2010 Accepted: 14 Jul 2010 Version of record first published: 29 Nov 2010 Abstract Work and study commitments of full†time undergraduate students at the University of New South Wales were investigated in four surveys conducted in 1994, 1999, 2006 and 2009. Respondents to the surveys reported the amount of time they spent during term time in paid employment, studying outside of formal class hours and in leisure activities (1999 and 2006 only). Fifty full†time students in 2006 and 37 in 2009 who were identified through the survey as working in excess of 10 hours per week were interviewed about their work and study relationships. Findings are consistent with UK studies showing an increase in part†time work by full†time students. In addition, a steady decrease was found in hours of study outside normal class time and in time spent in leisure activities. Reasons for working offered by interviewees were predominantly financial although many reported that gaining work experience, even in areas not related to their studies, was an important consideration. While some of the students interviewed felt that the government should provide more support for full†time students, the majority thought that the university should cater more for the needs of working students by providing more online facilities for assignment submission and communication and more flexible timetables and submission requirements. In the absence of any likely moves by governments to provide financial support to students, universities need to recognize the increasing demands placed on full†time students by part†time work and to implement procedures to assist working students. http://www.tandfonline.com/loi/cjew20 Literature: More students balance school with jobs By Jacob Serebrin | January 25th, 2012 | More than half of full-time university students in Quebec work while attending school and more than 40 per cent of all undergraduates work more than 20 hours weekly says a new study by the Fà ©dà ©ration à ©tudiante universitaire du Quà ©bec, a provincial lobby group that wants lower tuition. On top of that, more than twice as many full-time students aged 20 to 24 in the province work part-time jobs than students did in the 1970s. The workloads are hurting their educations: 43 per cent of full-time undergraduates say that their jobs have negatively affected their studies and 30 per cent say their jobs mean they’ll take longer to finish. It’s worst for PhD students—six in 10 say work forced them to prolong their studies. It’s not just students in Quebec who are putting in long hours between classes. According to the 2011 Canadian University Survey Consortium study 56 per cent of undergraduates in Canada work. The average number of hours is 18 per week. Nearly a fifth (18 per cent) work more than 30 hours weekly. One third of working students report â€Å"a negative impact on their academic performance.† The latest research also builds on a November 2010 report put out by FÉUQ that said employment income accounts for more than 50 per cent of the average full-time student’s income in Quebec. Predictably, FÉUQ is using the results of both studies to argue against a tuition increase that will take effect this fall. The hike will see tuition for in-province student’s rise by $325 a year to $3,793 in 2016. It’s easy to dismiss FÉUQ’s concerns–the province has the lowest fees in the country. But the fact that so many students are working so much suggests many are already at the breaking point. It also rebuts the claim by Quebec politicians that the increase would return tuition to 1968-9 levels, adjusted for inflation, which is what finance minister Raymond Backhand told the National Assembly. The claim that today’s students are paying less than past students has also been a favorite of the Conference of Rectors and Principals of Quebec Universities, which represents administrators. Perhaps tuition was indeed more expensive in the 1968-9s. But in the 1970s, students could afford to work less in coffee shops and clothing stores—and more on their studies—than students of today. http://oncampus.macleans.ca/education/2012/01/25/more-students-balancing-school-and-part-time-jobs/ Vol. 1, Issue 1 spring 2005 The Effects of College Student Employment on Academic Achievement By: Lauren E Watanabe Mentor: Jana Jasinski Review of Literature As money and resources become more scarce for college students, jobs become more of a necessity rather than an after school activity. Any changes to students routines will lead to changes in academics, whether they are positive or negative. Employment among college students has been increasing rapidly. Its effect on the academic performance of students has been questioned by many researchers (Green, 1987). Some of the issues raised in the literature concern matters such as the number of hours worked, whether or not the students jobs pertain to their majors, and the students workloads. As more students are employed, they face having to balance their academic requirements, extracurricular activities, and employment responsibilities to maintain their lifestyles (Furr Elling, 2000). The literature reviewed below examines how employment has affected academic achievement. Much of the research indicating that employment negatively affects students academic achievement stated that an increase in the amount of hours worked was the most influential factor. In one study, more hours worked decreased the likelihood of being an A student (Pritchard, 1996). According to Furr and Elling (2000), 29% of the students working 30-39 hours per week and 39% of those students working full time indicated that work had a negative and frequent impact on their academic progress. Those who take on part-time jobs are less engaged in school before they enter the labor force, and part-time employment, especially for more than 20 hours weekly, further exacerbates this problem (Steinberg et al., 1993, p. 175). Furr and Elling (2000) also found that upperclassmen worked more hours than freshmen, indicating that the older students would be more likely to suffer in their academics. Therefore, w orking full time has an even greater impact on academics because, often times, working 40 or more hours further decreases a students college grade point average (GPA) and is negatively related to completion of a bachelors degree (Astin, 1993). The act of balancing school work with the labor market may also lead students to put forth less effort into both because they are spreading themselves too thin (Astin, 1993). According to these researchers, it is not the job itself that causes the problems, but the overload on the amount of time worked because students who work more hours each week spend less time on homework, [and] pay attention in class less often (Steinberg Dornbusch, 1991, p. 307). Not all of the research has shown negative GPA effects from the amount of hours a student is employed. Some findings indicated that employment had either a positive effect or none at all. A number of researchers, for example, found that hard work built stronger academic character because it taught the students time management skills, gave them experience outside of the classroom, and provided them with more satisfaction in college (Pennington, Zvonkovic, Wilson, 1989). Dallam and Hoyt (1981) suggested that a good balance between stu dents credit hours and working hours forced students to be more organized and to have better time management. They also found that students who worked between 1 and 15 hours per week showed a slightly higher GPA than those whose workloads were heavier and those who were not working at all (Dallam Hoyt, 1981; Li-Chen Wooster, 1979). Not only were higher GPAs found in students that maintained jobs, but Green (2001) also stated that they had gained job skills, experience, knowledge of a variety of jobs, a sense of accomplishment, a feeling of responsibility, and money for personal and school expenses (p. 329). Other researchers, when comparing high and low academic performance and the amount of hours students worked, found that the amount of hours employed did not have an adverse effect on their academics (Pinto, Parente, Palmer, 2001). Similarly, Watts (2002) analysis of 19 students at the University of Brighton found that 4 of 12 working undergraduates said that working did not affect their academics and 5 said that it actually had a positive impact. Although some of the previously mentioned studies used samples of high school students rather than undergraduates, their results were consistent. The fact that some contained samples of less than 50 students, however, may have accounted for some of the differences between the positive and negative academic results. Not accounting for the amount of time actually put into the job, researchers have found that the type of employment a student holds has an impact on academics. Dead-end jobs such as a cashier or fast food worker tend to have a negative effect (Li-Chen Wooster, 1979), whereas high-quality, part-time jobs that seemed to develop career-related skills may in effect contribute to increased levels of career maturity, and these types of jobs are more likely to be flexible and work with students schedules (Healy, OShea, Crook, 1985). These types of jobs allow for hands-on experience that cannot be gained in the classroom alone. For example, of the 600 full-time students at Lamar University surveyed, 91 out of 215 students whose jobs related to their majors had a mean GPA of 2.98, while those whose jobs were career unrelated had a mean GPA of 2.66 (Li-Chen Wooster, 1979). Also, student comments suggested that employment related to a potential career provided additional experience. For example, 10 out of 23 comments of a 120 nursing student survey at a university indicated that they were gaining more practical experience . . . and that as all [their] employment is in care areas, [they felt] it [had] extended [their] experience (Lee, 1999, p. 448). As money and resources become more scarce for college students, jobs become more of a necessity rather than an after school activity. Any changes to students routines will lead to changes in academics, whether they are positive or negative. Though the research results were not always consistent, it was a common theme that the more hours worked led to decreased academic performance, but that working in general did not necessarily have a negative effect on grades. When it came to students jobs as they applied to their majors, the effects were positive in that they provided experience beyond the classroom (Lee, Mawdsley, Rangeley, 1999). The following study will look at these variables as well as class standing, the amount of credit hours taken, and flexibility of the work schedule in order to determine the positive or negative relationship of working and academics. Other variables, such as demographic factors, will also be examined. http://www.urj.ucf.edu/vol1issue1/watanabe/literature.php

Drug Use Essay -- Drugs Narcotics Research Papers

Drug Use Drug use is part of life in the United States. Some people use drugs for medical purposes and some use them to escape from reality or as a way to cope with problems. There are two main types of drugs, medicines and psychoactive drugs. Medicines are used to help the body fight injury and psychoactive drugs are used to cause a change in the users brain activity. Psychoactive drugs are very dangerous. They produce very powerful changes in the body. What a drug does is called its action and unwanted effects are called side effects. The side effects of a psychoactive drug can range from uncomfortable to life threatening. Review of Sociology as an Academic Discipline

Description of an academic discipline. Sociology is, in the broadest sense, the study of human interactions as well as social trends and phenomena that impact behaviors of individuals. (Dressler, 1973) It is generally classified as one of the social sciences along with economics, psychology, and anthropology and was established as a subject in the late 18th century.Karl Marx, the founder of modern Communism, succeeded in stimulating the general public’s interest in the subject more than anyone else even though he lived and wrote in a period before Sociology became fully recognized as an academic discipline. Scientific approach of sociology is vastly influenced by the fact that people are able to exist only in groups. In this sense, the focus of the sociologist’s attention is group behavior. The following is a brief example. While most individuals of the western world are convinced they are free to make choices for themselves and that no one is allowed to dictate their li ves, in reality following general behavioral trends is a natural aspect of belonging to a society. For instance, the trend of lifelong career development has caused millions of women to choose—often unintentionally—career over full reproductive potential (Hilgeman & Butts, 2009).Commonsense ideas and explanations represent a form of social perspective since they claim to represent the things that â€Å"everyone knows† about the social world and human behavior. These ideas, whatever they may be, are not necessarily incorrect, but they do tend to have one characteristic that sets them apart from sociological forms of knowledge, namely that commonsense ideas are simply assumed to be true. Sociological knowledge, however, has greater validity than most forms of commonsense knowledge because it has been carefully tested. To put the matter differently, sociologists try to base their statements about human behavior on evidence rather than simple assumption. To do so , they apply systematic ways of studying social behavior like questionnaires, observations and experiments. References: 1. Dressler, D. (1973). Pro War in Iraq Essay - 2042 Words

Pro War in Iraq I do not subscribe to the fashionable notion of moral equivalence between all deeply-held beliefs. I believe in the rights of the individual over the collective. I believe democracy is better than dictatorship, both morally and practically. Not necessarily democracy as we or the Americans or the French practice it, but the idea that in every possible practical way, you should let people make their own decisions, and if these decisions need to be circumscribed in any way, then you should only do it with the explicit approval of a majority of the people in question. And above all that a people must be able to change governments and leaders without resorting to force. So my ongoing position is that I am not comfortable†¦show more content†¦The damning picture of the state of the Arab world painted in this UN report cannot be blamed on America, or Israel, or global capitalism. The blame lies squarely with the dictators under whom the Arab people have suffered, who have over a lo ng period stolen and squandered the regions wealth, just as Communist apparatchiks did under the Soviet system. How do they get away with it? Why do the people themselves not rise up? The aspect dictatorship which gets most attention is the brutal suppression of domestic dissent, for which you need to take over the organs of internal security. But you cannot just plant yourself as a dictatorship and suck the wealth out of a country or a people. Dictatorship too is an eco-system. You need a way of legitimizing your rule in the minds of a section of the population, and someone to blame for all of the evils for which evidence emerges. Once you have these things, you are in business with a nice, self-sustaining little earner. Other dictators tap into other vulnerable beliefs among their people to give them a veil of credibility. It might be nationalism, anti-Semitism, feelings of angst and inadequacy. In the case of most Arab dictators, it happens to be Islam. Islam contains a number of features that can be easily hijacked by unscrupulous leaders: the disrespect for non-believers, the basis for non-independent religious courts, the concept of jihad, and the belief in the afterlife.Show MoreRelated Pro War in Iraq Essay2021 Words   |  9 PagesPro War in Iraq I do not subscribe to the fashionable notion of moral equivalence between all deeply-held beliefs.
